30 years of Austria in the EU

30 years ago, Austria, Finland and Sweden joined the European Union!

This was the beginning of a new journey in a free, democratic and secure Europe.

Since then, the EU has been our driver of prosperity and peace!

Foreign Minister Schallenberg emphasised in a joint video message with his counterparts from Finland and Sweden on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of joining the EU.

ATTENTION: As of 22 October 2024, the following applies:

Japanese nationals, who entered Austria visa-free, consumed 90 or more days of visa-free stay and left Austriacannot re-enter the Austrian territory in order to prolong the visa-free stay in Austria up to the maximum of 180 days. In these cases, two options are available: either the next entry will take place 90 days AFTER the exit OR an application for visa D needs to be submitted BEFORE travelling to Austria.

COVID-19 Entry Requirements

Austrian Embassy Consular Services and Help in Emergencies

The Austrian Embassy Tokyo accepts applications in all consular areas, including visa, residence permits, passports and citizenship matters.

The consular hours at the embassy are restricted, only a limited number of people may visit the consulate per day, therefore every application requires an appointment (incl. proof of being alive).

Appointment requests can be made online with the appointment system. Personal appearances without prior appointment confirmation is not possible. Please note, that due to increased travel activities, appointment requests should be submitted as early as possible. 

The embassy is available for all consular questions via email.

For urgent consular emergencies for Austrian citizens (accident, death, etc. - NO visa information) outside of office hours, the embassy's on-call service can be reached under: +81-(0)90-4600-0148.
