Franz Werfel Grant for young university teachers of German language and Austrian literature
The Franz- Werfel- Scholarship is aimed at young university teachers who focus on Austrian literature and provides a young scholar (PhD student, post-doc) the opportunity to research and teach at an Austrian university or research institution.Successful candidates receive stipends to spend up to 12 months in a university department, research institute or archive in Austria to undertake their research.
The scholarship covers accommodation, health insurance, travel costs, exemption from tuition fees as well as a monthly allowance. Application deadlines are 1 March and 15 September, annually. For more details go to grants.at .
Training Scholarships for “German as a foreign language” teachers
The department “Kultur und Sprache” at the Austrian Federal Ministry for Education, Art and Culture organizes continuous training seminars in Austria for teachers of “German as a foreign language” from all over the world. A limited number of scholarships for these ‘international seminars’ is available. Application deadline: 31 January for seminars in the same year.
Awards for the translation of Austrian literature
The Arts Division and the Culture Division of the Federal Chancellery of Austria offers a variety of arts-related scholarship, prizes and funds. Two awards in Austrian Literature and German Language are open for applications:
- Financial support for the translation of contemporary Austrian literature into other languages (publishers can apply)
- Translation award, recognising excellent translations of Austrian literature into other languages. (translators can apply)

Writer-in-residence programme “Grazer StadtschreiberIn”
The city of Graz offers the literary scholarship “Grazer StadtschreiberIn” to one contemporary writer per year. The scholarships includes free accommodation and a monthly stipend of € 1100,-- for a period of 12 months. The scholarship aims at providing the writer with the opportunity to pursue his/her literary work in Graz and engage with the local literary/cultural scene.Application deadline: 31 March every year. Opportunities for research on Nobel Prize winner Elfriede Jelinek and her work
The ‘Forschungsplattform Elfriede Jelinek’ of the University of Vienna is encouraging young researchers of all levels to undertake studies related to the Austrian author and winner of the 2004 Nobel Prize in Literature, Elfriede Jelinek, her environment, as well as the general art scene in Austria in the 1960s. Opportunities include essays, dissertations, publishing works, scholarships and internships.
