Lisbeth Zwerger
Born in 1954 in Austria, Lisbeth Zwerger is an internationally recognized illustrator. The light colors and delicate style of her illustration not only reinterpreted classic fairy tales, but also added vivid contemporary charm to them. Lisbeth Zwerger was born into an artistic family and has been constantly influenced by art and literature. During her study at Applied Arts Academy of Vienna, she was inspired by Jiri Trnka’s illustration of Andersen’s Fairy Tales and started her illustration career with classic fairy tales as the themes. She was also deeply influenced by illustrator Arthur Rackham (1867-1939) from Victorian period in the 19th century. In 1977, her first illustration work, E.T.A. Hoffmann’s The Strange Child, was published and became an immediate hit; it was recognized at Bologna Children’s Book Fair. In 1990, at the young age of 36, she became the winner of Hans Christian Andersen Award, which is the highest honor for illustrators and is considered Academy Awards for children’s books. In the early period, Zwerger was influenced by Rackham: classical characters, curves and a tone of dark brown. But gradually, she developed her own style: bright colors, delicate strokes and a lot of blank. It shows that Zwerger put her heart into topic selection; it also shows that she’s constantly breaking her own boundaries in painting. Her famous work includes: Thumbelina (1980), The Nightingale (1984), The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (1996), Alice in the Wonderland (1999), Swan Lake (2002) and The Nutcracker (2003)..etc. In the early spring of 2012, Blue Dragon Art invited Lisbeth Zwerger to bring more than 100 pieces of her illustration work to Taichung Cultural & Creative Industries Park. Fairy tale images full of Zwerger’s unique style and imagination will lead people in Taiwan into a journey of the illustration world.
