Installation „Ninth November Night“ by Gottfried Helnwein on display in front of the Israeli Opera in Tel Aviv
Austrian artist Gottfried Helnwein’s installation will be shown in the wake of the Opera Premier of „The Child Dreams"
(Tel Aviv, 15 January 2010): On 18 January 2010, the Israeli Opera will stage the world premiere of "The Child Dreams" – a newly commissioned opera based on a play by Hanoch Levin and music composed by Gil Shochat. Austrian artist Gottfried Helnwein is the set- and costume designer for this opera production.
To mark the start of the opera’s musical season 2010 and to celebrate the world-premiere of "The Child dreams" on 18 January 2010 the installation "Ninth November Night" by the Austrian artist Gottfried Helnwein in memory of "Kristallnacht" 1938 will be on display for three weeks on the Plaza in front of the Israeli Opera, Shaul HaMelech Street 19 in Tel Aviv.
This art-installation was originally erected for the first time on 9 November 1988 in the city of Cologne in Germany, on the occasion of the 50th Anniversary of the pogrom-night of November 9, 1938. The Installation was placed between the Cologne Cathedral and the Ludwig Museum, alongside the railroad track of the central station. A hundred meter long wall of pictures with large images of children's faces, in a seemingly endless row, as if made to line up to be "selected". With the faces of christian, jewish and handicapped children, that lived in Germany in 1988.
For the first time this memorial is now presented in Israel and for that occasion the artist included faces of children living in Israel in 2010. The exhibition/installation consisting of 24 large-sized children’s portraits by Gottfried Helnwein will be shown until mid-February 2010 on the plaza in front of the Israeli Opera.
