• citizens of other countries who require a visa 

who are also legal and permanent residents in Indonesia, Singapore or Timor-Leste. If you live outside any of these countries, please refer to the Austrian Embassy or Consulate competent for your place of residence:

If your travel destination is Austria, Malta or Slovenia, please apply for your visa at the Austrian Embassy in Jakarta. If you are traveling to multiple destinations within the Schengen area, the Austrian Embassy is only responsible for issuing a visa if your main travel destination (e.g. prolonged length of stay) is Austria, Malta or Slovenia; or – in case you are planning to stay an equal amount of time in different Schengen country – if you enter the Schengen area through Austria, Malta or Slovenia. In other cases, please refer to the Schengen Embassy or Consulate responsible for your main travel destination.

Citizens of Singapore do not require a visa when traveling to Austria

• as a tourist
• for business purposes
• without the intention to take up work
• and staying no longer than 90 days (within a period of six months) in the entire Schengen area (i.e. time spent in all Schengen countries added up)

Citizens of other countries that wish to apply for a visa should refer to the French Embassy in Singapore (which issues visas on behalf of Austria). The French Embassy’s conditions for visa applications apply! For example, the submission of an electronic guarantee letter is not possible.

All visa applicants please refer to the Portuguese Embassy in Dili. For inquiries regarding prolonged duration of stay the Austrian Embassy in Jakarta will gladly assist you.

Schengen is a small village in Luxemburg where, on 14^th June 1985, the governments of Belgium, France, Germany, Luxemburg and the Netherlands signed an agreement stipulating the progressive removal of border controls between the participating countries. The current so-called “Schengen-countries” (i.e. those that have signed the treaty) that together constitute the “Schengen area” are:

Not all member states of the European Union are Schengen countries. The Embassies and Consulates of the Schengen countries issue so-called “Schengen-visa” that generally permit travel to ALL participating countries. Border controls take place at the first entry into the Schengen area. There are no border controls between Schengen countries, although exceptions (random checks) are possible at all times.

IMPORTANT NOTICE: Safety regulations and regulations of the civil aviation authorities often require airlines to check the identity of passengers at check-in and boarding. It is thus that you must be able to present valid ID even when traveling between Schengen countries. Austria is a member of the European Union AND Schengen. An Austrian visa thus permits you to travel to other Schengen countries.

You should apply for your visa at least four weeks and a maximum of three months before your planned journey. Please book your itinerary before applying for a visa, as the Austrian Embassy cannot issue visas without such confirmation. In addition, the Embassy cannot be held responsible for changes to your itinerary between the time of your application and the issue-date of your visa. (In this case, you must re-apply for a visa.)

The visa processing time is at least 14 days and may take (significantly) longer in individual cases. Processing a visa in less than 14 days is not possible due to technical reasons. Please keep this in mind when planning your journey.

C-Visa: Short-term travel visa

D-Visa: for a prolonged stay (up to 6 months) in Austria

A complete application facilitates the issuing of your visa. All documents must be submitted as originals AND accompanied by copies. Documents must be in German, English or French, or translated into one of these.

Please fill in the application form on a computer, typewriter, or in handwritten capital letters. Please sign the application form yourself. (A representative’s signature cannot be accepted!) Incomplete applications will be rejected.

The Visa fee must be paid upon submission of your application in cash in IDR; no credit cards or cheques! The Visa fee will not be refunded in case of rejection of the application.

The validity of your passport must exceed your intended period of stay by at least three months. Your passport must also have at least two empty pages. The photo in your passport must match your appearance at the time of your application.

Please attach a photo that must match your exact appearance at the time of your application and fulfils this special criteria.

1. for business trips:

• an invitation from a firm or an authority to attend meetings, conferences or events connected with trade, industry or work;
• other documents which show the existence of trade relations or relations for work purposes;
• entry tickets for fairs and congresses, if appropriate;
• documents proving the business activities of the company;
• documents proving the applicant’s employment status in the company;

2. for journeys undertaken for the purposes of study or other types of training:

• a certificate of enrolment at an educational establishment for the purposes of attending vocational or theoretical courses within the framework of basic and further training;

• student cards or certificates of the courses to be attended

3. for journeys undertaken for the purposes of tourism or for private reasons:

• documents relating to accommodation:

— an invitation from the host if staying with one,

— a document from the establishment providing accommodation or any other appropriate document indicating the accommodation envisaged;

• documents relating to the itinerary:

— confirmation of the booking of an organised trip or any other appropriate document indicating the envisaged travel plans,

— in the case of transit: visa or other entry permit for the third country of destination; tickets for onward journey;

4. for journeys undertaken for political, scientific, cultural, sports or religious events or other reasons:

— invitation, entry tickets, enrolments or programmes stating (wherever possible) the name of the host organisation and the length of stay or any other appropriate document indicating the purpose of the journey;

5. for journeys of members of official delegations who, following an official invitation addressed to the government of the third country concerned, participate in meetings, consultations, negotiations or exchange programmes, as well as in events held in the territory of a Member State by intergovernmental organisations:

— a letter issued by an authority of the third country concerned confirming that the applicant is a member of the official delegation travelling to a Member State to participate in the abovementioned events, accompanied by a copy of the official invitation;

6. for journeys undertaken for medical reasons:

— an official document of the medical institution confirming necessity for medical care in that institution and proof of sufficient financial means to pay for the medical treatment.

1. reservation of or return or round ticket;

2. proof of financial means in the country of residence;

3. proof of employment: bank statements;

4. proof of real estate property;

5. proof of integration into the country of residence: family ties; professional status.

1. consent of parental authority or legal guardian (when a minor does not travel with them);

2. proof of family ties with the host/inviting person.

All visa applicants must present travel insurance valid for the entire travel period that must fulfill at least the following conditions:

• Medical treatment in case of illness or emergency
• Transport back home due to illness or emergency
• Coverage of at least EUR 30.000,00
• Geographical coverage: all Schengen countries
• Time period of coverage: from the first until the last day of the visa’s validity
• The insurance company is based in an EEA (European Economic Area) member state or Switzerland. Otherwise, the applicant must provide proof of reinsurance
• The insurance company bears all outstanding costs such as doctor’s and hospital fees etc. Insurance policies whereby the insurant temporarily bears the cost and is refunded upon return cannot be accepted

Exception: Officials traveling to Austria on official visits; individuals invited by Vienna-based international organisations who present an invitation clearly stating the intention of the inviting party to bear all medical costs in case of medical treatment or hospitalisation; relatives of citizens of EU countries and Switzerland need not present proof of insurance

Advice: We advise you to take out insurance covering a longer period than your intended stay. In case your travel plans change, you will not need to take out new insurance.

Private individuals, authorised representatives of clubs, or companies can submit a Guarantee Letter at the aliens’ police competent for their place of residence in Austria, which will then be forwarded electronically to the Embassy. Notarisation is not required in this case. If you intend to apply for a visa in Singapore through the French Embassy (which issues Schengen visa on behalf of Austria), or through the Portuguese Embassy in Timor-Leste, the Electronic Guarantee Letter is not applicable. In this case, please use the following form: Guarantee Letter

Guarantee Letters can ONLY be submitted by individuals whose principal residence is Austria, or by clubs and companies based in Austria. Applications from relatives of Austrian nationals or of EEA-citizens with residence permits for Austria do not require a Guarantee Letter.

The Austrian Embassy in Jakarta is competent to issue Schengenvisas ("C") for Malta and Slovenia. Austrian Schengenvisa application conditions apply.

The Embassy kindly asks for your understanding regarding submission of visa application documents: All application material must be submitted by the applicant in person. It is NOT possible to discuss individual visa applications with a third party. The Embassy does not issue confirmation regarding the proper receipt of visa application documents. All correspondence and procedural instructions take place directly and ONLY between the Embassy and the applicant.

Applicants may not instruct a travel agency or any other third party to submit their visa application. If the applicant is not present in person, his or her application will be rejected immediately.

Please assemble all original documents and make copies of these BEFORE arriving at the Embassy, as this will accelerate submission of your application.

The Visa fee must be paid immediately upon submission of your documents and is not refundable even in the case of rejection. The fee is determined in Euros and converted into Indonesian Rupiah according to a monthly varying exchange rate stipulated by the Austrian Foreign Ministry. The current exchange rate and fee are displayed publicly at the visa counter. The visa fee must be paid in cash in Indonesian Rupiah; no credit cards, cheques, or other currencies (including Euros) will be accepted. NO additional fees must be paid. You will receive a receipt immediately after payment of the fee. 

It is strictly prohibited for Embassy staff to accept tips or any other form of payment. Please spare our staff and yourself the situation of being suspected of corruption. In this regard, Embassy staff activity is particularly closely monitored. Any attempt at corruption will entail the immediate rejection of your application.

We are committed to politeness and friendly consultation. We thus ask you to approach our staff with equal politeness and self-restraint, even in case you do not agree with the Embassy’s decision regarding your visa application. The Austrian Embassy is required to adhere to principles in accordance with the rule of law when making visa decisions. Thus, these decisions will always be well-founded and are never made arbitrarily. Your application is processed by several departments and officials, and the individual processing steps are again supervised by other officials, in order to avoid wrong or arbitrary outcomes. The Consul makes his decision only after several other departments and staff have completed their task in processing your application. Therefore, all decisions are always justified and well-founded. The staff involved in processing your application is closely supervised in order to guarantee the objective handling of its task in accordance with regulations.

Individuals traveling to Austria frequently (e.g. for business purposes) may – under specific conditions – be issued a visa for multiple short-term visits. The total time of all visits in the Schengen area (i.e. the time spent in all Schengen countries added up) may not exceed 90 days within a period of six months. The validity of this type of visa is typically one year. If you believe to be among this group of people, please contact our staff who will gladly assist you.

Citizens of Indonesia holding a valid Diplomatic or Service Passport can transfer through or visit Austria without a visa up to 30 days within a period of six months (counted from the day of the first entry into Austria or any other Schengen country). At the time of entry the Diplomatic or Service Passport must be valid for at least another six months.   

This regulation does NOT apply to first-time immigration with respect to commencement of official duties of holders of Diplomatic or Service Passports assigned to diplomatic or consular missions.

Please be advised that if immigration into Austria takes place via a Schengen country (e.g. flight Jakarta-Singapore-Frankfurt-Vienna), you will enter the Schengen area through a country other than Austria and must therefore apply for a Schengen visa at the Embassy of that particular country.

If you intend to stay in Austria longer than three months or wish to settle there as a permanent resident, you must apply for a D-Visa or a residence permit prior to your entry into Austria. The following is an indicative non-exhaustive list of required documents taken from the Austrian Aliens’ Law. The Austrian Embassy in Jakarta will gladly inform you about the rules of procedure that apply in your specific case.

For visits of three to six months please apply for a D-Visa in person at the Austrian Embassy in Jakarta. (Applicants whose principal residence is Singapore may submit their application at the Austrian Embassy in Singapore to be forwarded to Jakarta) Please allow at least 14 days for the processing of your application. The Visa fee is EUR 75,00.

Please include the following documents in your application:

• Application Form (the same form as when applying for a Schengen C-Visa)
• Passport that must be valid for at least another three months after your intended exit from Austria, and a copy of your passport
• 1 passport photo
• Birth Certificate (original and copy)
• If applicable: Marriage Certificate, Certificate of Adoption, etc.
• Proof of travel purpose (work permit, au-pair contract, university acceptance letter, etc.)
• Proof of accommodation (lease agreement, contract for student housing, etc.)
• Proof of income or sufficient funds
• Proof of health and accident insurance
• Police Clearance Certificate

If you intend to stay in Austria longer than six months or wish to settle there as a permanent resident, you must apply for a residence permit at the Austrian Embassy in Jakarta prior to your entry into Austria. (Citizens of Singapore can apply directly at the Austrian provincial government or submit their application at the Austrian Embassy in Singapore to be forwarded.)

The following residence permits may be issued by the competent Austrian authority (provincial governor):

• Stay permit
• Residence permit
• Permanent stay
• Family member

In any case first-time applicants must apply at the Austrian Embassy. Exempt from this requirement are applicants who can enter Austria without a visa (e.g. citizens of Singapore). They may apply directly in Austria.

Please include the following documents in your application:

• Copy of your passport
• Birth Certificate
• If applicable: Marriage Certificate, Certificate of Adoption, etc.
• 1 passport photo
• Proof of accommodation (lease agreement, contract for student housing, etc.)
• Proof of sufficient funds or liability declaration issued by an Austrian resident (exempt from this are dependants of residents of Austria)
• Proof of health and accident insurance (exempt are students and co-insured family members)
• If married to an Austrian citizen: Marriage Certificate, Proof of citizenship, Residence registration form
• Proof of travel purpose (e.g. Work Permit from the Public Employment Service of Austria (AMS), etc.)
• Police Clearance Certificate

All documents must be duly legalised and translated into German:

Documents issued the Authorities of Indonesia must be legalised by the Indonesian Ministry of Justice, the Indonesian Foreign Ministry and the Austrian Embassy in Jakarta. Translations into German must be undertaken by a certified translator, either in Austria (for complete list see www.gerichtsdolmetsch.at) or Indonesia (list of translators). In the latter case, the signature of the translator must be legalised by the Indonesian Ministry of Justice, the Indonesian Foreign Ministry and the Austrian Embassy in Jakarta.

Documents issued by the Authorities of Singapore must be legalised by the Foreign Ministry of Singapore and the Austrian Embassy in Singapore. Translations into German must be undertaken by a certified translator.

Documents issued by the Authorities of Timor-Leste must be legalised by the Foreign Ministry of Timor-Leste and the Austrian Embassy in Jakarta. Translations into German must be undertaken by a certified translator.

The uniform fee is EUR 100,00, of which EUR 80 (EUR 50 for minors) must be paid immediately upon submission of the application and the rest upon collection of your residence permit in Austria.

The Austrian Embassy will contact you if your residence permit application is successful. You will then have to apply for a D-Visa. The Austrian Embassy will issue this D-Visa (with four months validity) that permits you to travel to Austria in order to collect your residence permit.
