This year, the Austrian Cultural Forum Tel Aviv will sponsor the „Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Prizes of the Austrian Cultural Forum Tel Aviv“. Israeli composers are invited to compose a new symphony and a new string quartet, which will be performed during the „Mozart Year“ 2006. The Prize for the symphony will be Euro 1.800,--, the Prize for the quartet, Euro 1.500,--.
„Mozart’s works will be played much around the world in 2006, so we thought we should try something different in order to honour him“, said Mr Martin Gärtner, the Director of the Forum which is integrated in the Austrian Embassy in Tel Aviv.
Mr Dan Yuhas, Chairman of the Israel Composers’ League, expressed his satisfaction with the arrangement and said he was looking forward to new Israeli music being performed in Israel and hopefully also abroad.
The competition will end on 6 November. Symphonies handed in must have the instrumentation of Mozart’s 25th Symphony, KV 183. Both, symphony and string quartet are limited to 20 minutes length. A Jury of three, most likely one Austrian and two Israelis, will select the winning piece in each category and announce them on 6 December.
The Israel Contemporary String Quartet has agreed to play the winning quartet during the „Mozart Year“ 2006. The Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra will play the winning symphony.
Compositions should reach either the Austrian Cultural Forum Tel Aviv, R. Hahilazon 12, 52522 Ramat Gan, or the Israel Composers’ League, R. Begin 55, 67137 Tel Aviv, 3rd floor, in three copies in an anonymous envelope which should also contain another envelope with name and address of the composer.
