Statement from the Ministry for Foreign Affairs on the execution of Saddam
Vienna, 30 December 2006 - Austria has always spoken out against impunity at the international level, in particular the impunity of high-ranking political decision-makers.
Austria therefore consistently supports efforts to ensure rule of law procedures and effective international criminal prosecution - including prosecution by the International Criminal Court.
Austria rejects the death penalty for fundamental reasons and advocates its abolition worldwide.
This rejection applies without any exception and irrespectively of the nature and severity of the crime committed.
Saddam Hussein’s guilt of suppressing his own people and of murdering political opponents as well as innocent civilians has been unquestionably proven.
However, Austria’s basic stance on the death penalty also applies in this case.
Austria hopes that Iraqis will summon the strength required to work towards reconciliation and the national unity of their country.
