APA: Ukraine – Kurz: Austria is in favour of "targeted sanctions"

Foreign Minster: "Europe must not turn a blind eye when people are shot in its immediate neighbourhood"

Vienna (APA) – Austria supports the sanctions planned by the EU against Ukraine. Foreign Minister Sebastian Kurz (ÖVP) told APA today that "we are in favour of targeted sanctions against those responsible for the escalation of violence". He said he had "suggested this approach to Federal Chancellor Werner Faymann (SPÖ) and agreed with him on that".

"Europe must not turn a blind eye when people are shot in its immediate neighbourhood", Kurz said and added that "Violence must not go unpunished." Kurz summoned the Ukrainian Ambassador to the Foreign Ministry in protest over today’s escalation of violence.

Kurz did not want to be specific about the type of sanctions and said that this would be discussed by the EU foreign ministers Thursday afternoon. European Council President Herman Van Rompuy said on Wednesday that sanctions are to be agreed at this special meeting of the chief diplomats.
