Vienna, 4 January 2013 – "Every year I am delighted by the commitment and enthusiasm of the young people who dress up as the Three Wise Men and go carol singing", Vice-Chancellor and Foreign Minister Michael Spindelegger said on the occasion of the Christian Carol singers' visit to the Foreign Ministry. In the framework of this charity organisation, thousands of children and adolescents support people in developing countries, opening up new opportunities for them and instilling hope.
"Years ago, I was a carol singer myself, and that is why I am even more pleased that the focus of this year's campaign is on Ethiopia, a priority country of Austria's Development Cooperation", State Secretary Lopatka said. The 2013 campaign supports concrete projects in Ethiopia: In Dire Dawa, Ethiopia's second largest city, the money donated will be used to make the lives of children living in the streets a better one. In the Qarssa region, the donations are earmarked for improving the food situation and the income of the inhabitants through education initiatives, better seed and sustainable farming techniques.
The donations made during the "Dreikönigsaktion" are used to support 500 aid projects in 20 countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America every year. In 2012, donations added up to 15.3 million euro. "An impressive contribution", Spindelegger said. "I hope that this year Austrians will once again be ready to help and support the commitment of children and young people for those who are less fortunate than they are", the Foreign Minister added.
The work of the Dreikönigsaktion is also supported by the Austrian Development Cooperation (www.entwicklung.at).
