Austrian "Dr. Alois Mock" Library opened in Zadar

Zadar, 1 July 2013 – An Austria Library is opened at Zadar University today to mark Croatia's accession to the European Union and at the same time as a token of the special relations between Austria and Croatia. The Austria Library in Zadar is the 62nd Austria Library world-wide and the third in Croatia after Osijek and Rijeka. It bears the name of former Austrian Foreign Minister Dr. Alois Mock, the great European and friend of Croatia who like scarcely any other politician involved in foreign policy during his time supported Croatia and advocated European integration. The opening of the library is also the high point of a twelve-part cultural programme being held in all areas of Croatia that has been organised by the Austrian Cultural Forum and the Austrian Embassy in Zagreb to mark Croatia's accession to the EU.

In his address when the foundation agreement of the Austria Library was signed in the ceremonial hall of Zadar University, the Austrian Secretary General for Foreign Affairs, Dr. Johannes Kyrle, emphasised the traditionally close relations between Austria and Croatia that are based on mutual trust and referred to the foundation of the new Austria Library in the university of Zadar as an "important impetus for reviving and expanding the cultural and scientific relations between Austria and the region of Dalmatia". Austrian Ambassador Dr. Martin Eichtinger, Head of the Cultural Policy Department of the Austrian Foreign Ministry and former close colleague of Dr. Mock acknowledged Dr. Mock's particular commitment to "the unification of Europe as well as EU enlargement and Croatia".

The new Austria Library "Dr. Alois Mock" is located in a state-of-the-art reading room of the university and equipped with some 2,000 books and media referring to Austria that were bought with the friendly assistance of Hypo Alpe Adria Bank, EVN, VIPnet and Styria.

The Austria Libraries abroad are managed by the Austrian Foreign Ministry via Austrian Embassies and Austrian Cultural Fora. They facilitate access to literature and science as also information about Austria for a growing number of interested persons. In addition to their role as places of knowledge transfer they are also popular venues for events and well-established platforms of intercultural dialogue and contribute significantly to spreading the German language. About 900 cultural and scientific events attended by some 200,000 people were held in the 28 countries with Austria Libraries in 2012.
