Austrian Ministry of European and International Affairs on the release of an Austrian citizen from prison in Syria

Vienna, 8 June 2013 – "I am pleased about the release of Mohammad Jamal ARABI who holds the dual Austrian and Syrian citizenship. He was freed from prison in Syria in an act of clemency and he has now returned safely to his family in Austria", Vice-Chancellor and Foreign Minister Michael Spindelegger said on the arrival of Mr. Arabi to Vienna.

The Austrian Foreign Ministry and the Austrian embassy in Damascus in particular, have done everything in their power to have Mr. Arabi released since his arrest became known on 16 December 2012. Against the background of the difficult conditions currently prevailing in Syria, the Ministry has used diplomatic channels and involved other states. These efforts have now come to a successful conclusion.

Regular contacts and exchanges of information between the Ministry and Mr. Arabi's family have been maintained throughout the detention period.
