Spindelegger in Romania: “Strategic interest in stable domestic conditions”

Austrian Vice-Chancellor meets President of Romania

Vienna/Bucharest, 17 October 2012 – Vice-Chancellor and Foreign Minister Michael Spindelegger had a bilateral working meeting with Romania’s President Trajan Basescu in Bucharest on October 17th. “The relationships between our two countries are closer and more multi-faceted than ever before – on a human, cultural, political and economic level. Romania has become a strategic partner for us in many respects; we share common interests with regard to energy security, the development of the Danube region and to overcoming the current financial and economic crises”, Spindelegger said after the meeting.

Besides economic issues, the talks focused on EU topics and developments in Romania’s domestic policy. “For many years, Austria has been one of the biggest foreign investors in Romania; over 6000 Austrian companies do business here. We therefore have a strategic interest in stable and predictable domestic conditions. This includes progress in terms of the rule of law and reforms of the judicial system. Romania must remain a reliable member for the partners in the EU“, the Vice-Chancellor said. Spindelegger asked President Basescu for his support in overcoming problems with red tape and procedural hurdles sometimes encountered by Austrian companies in Romania.

Other issues on the agenda were regional topics, the cooperation between Austria and Romania in the UN Human Rights Council, and the strategy for the Danube Region that is based on a joint initiative of Romania and Austria dating back to 2009. “The EU strategy for the Danube Region is a Romanian-Austrian success story. In times that are difficult in economic terms, it is more important than ever to bundle interests and jointly plan investments and projects in the Danube area to tap ever-scarcer financial resources and to make the best possible use of growth potential”, the Vice-Chancellor said. An informal meeting of the foreign ministers of the Danube region will be held in St. Pölten, Lower Austria on 22 October; Titus Corlatean is expected to represent Romania at this conference.
