Clarification regarding the use of hyphens on German license plates

Berlin, 23 August 2012 – Over the past few days, some misunderstandings have arisen as a result of press reports and Internet discussions in Germany, especially in Southern Germany, concerning the wording on car license plates. It has been claimed that owners of cars registered in Germany would have to pay a 500-euro fine in Austria if the style of the number on the license plate differed from that in the vehicle registration certificate.

The Austrian Embassy in Berlin wishes to provide clarification for this error:

License numbers may be written with or without a hyphen in the vehicle registration certificate. Both forms are valid in Austria. There are no legal grounds for any fine to be imposed in this respect.
