The Austrian Foreign Ministry on the UNESCO vote on membership of Palestine

Vienna, 31 October 2011 – The Austrian Federal Ministry for European and International Affairs confirms that it has supported the application of Palestine for UNESCO membership at today’s General Conference of UNESCO in Paris. The Austrian representative to UNESCO made the following statement following the vote UNESCO: “The issue of Palestinian UNESCO membership has been intensively discussed. Austria deeply regrets that it has not been possible to achieve a common EU position in this question. Our vote is a vote for the Palestinian National Authority and the Palestinian people with the intention that they are given access to the valuable work carried out by UNESCO.” Austria stressed further in the UNESCO General Conference that the application of Palestine for membership of the United Nations will be dealt with by the Security Council to the terms of its rules of procedure. Austria will continue to give its full support in future to the efforts being made for the achievement of a common EU position in this issue.

The application for membership of Palestine was accepted by a large majority vote (107 votes in favour and 14 against).
