Golden Decoration of Honour of the Republic of Austria awarded to a pioneer of cultural exchange after 1989

Budapest, 16 November 2011 – He is ubiquitousin the arts scene, but as a person he prefers to remain in the background: In 1989, even before the Berlin Wall came down, Hans Knoll opened the “Knoll Galéria” in Budapest, the first private gallery for contemporary art in what still was the former Eastern Block at that time.

For more than 20 years, Hans Knoll has been supporting and promoting mainly Austrian and Hungarian art and artists. “Hans Knoll’s ingenious instinct for interesting artists, for trends and developments in the art scene, for political relationships, for quality without compromise and for the correct assessment of realities has a great influence on the contemporary arts scene in the entire region”, said the Director of the Austrian Cultural Forum Dr. Elisabeth Kornfeind. As a curator of international exhibitions, symposiums and publications and as a lecturer he has established and he maintains contacts and upholds the discourse between artists and galleries in Austria and Hungary.

Dr. Michael Zimmermann, Austria’s ambassador in Budapest awarded the Golden Decoration of Honour of the Republic of Austria to Hans Knoll in the presence of artists, collectors and art experts on 16 November.
