Spindelegger: "Serbia shows political prudence and farsightedness"

Foreign Minister on UN resolution regarding Kosovo

Vienna, 9 September 2010 - "The agreement on a joint UN resolution by Serbia and the EU is a positive signal and a relief for the entire region. With this step, Serbia has demonstrated political reason and farsightedness“, said Foreign Minister Michael Spindelegger in a reaction to the new draft resolution on the advisory opinion of the International Court of Justice on Kosovo, which is jointly submitted by Serbia and the Member States of the EU to the General Assembly of the United Nations.

Spindelegger added: "This resolution creates the basis for urgently needed direct talks between Belgrade and Pristina, which should now begin soon. The European Union will actively follow and support these talks. Now the door is once again open for further progress by Belgrade on the way towards the EU. It is time to forward Serbia’s application for EU membership to the Commission."
