Spindelegger: „Obama’s initiative is a bold signal for peace“

Vienna, 2.September 2010 – „Achieving a breakthrough in the peace negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians will require courage and determination on both sides“, said Foreign Minister Michael Spindelegger on the direct talks resumed in Washington today between the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.

Spindelegger believes that the objective of achieving a peace agreement within a year is ambitious but feasible, yet peace cannot be imposed from outside. „This American initiative is a bold signal. The people in the Middle East are tired of conflict and want to finally live in peace, security, and dignity“, Spindelegger continued.

„The negotiation partners can rely on active political support by the European Union, both bilaterally and as part of the Middle East Quartet. As in the past, Austria will make its contribution on a political level and in the implementation of any future peace steps“, the Foreign Minister concluded.
