Spindelegger: "Must prevent escalation on the Korean Peninsula“

Vienna, 21 May 2010 - „We take the announcement of the findings of the investigation report on the sinking of a South Korean warship presented by the Republic of Korea very seriously. We must join our forces to prevent an escalation on the Korean Peninsula“, said Foreign Minister Michael Spindelegger. The investigation report by the Republic of Korea obviously comes to the conclusion that the South Korean warship "Cheonan" sank on 26 March as a result of the impact from a torpedo of North Korean origin. The incident caused the death of 46 South Korean seamen.

„We are deeply concerned with the possible impact on the stability of the Korean peninsula. In case of an involvement of the United Nations Security Council, Austria will support a clear and united response by the international community within this body“, said Spindelegger.
