Spindelegger: “A great politician, a great South Tyrolean, a great European”

Foreign Minister on the death of Silvius Magnago

Vienna, 25 May 2010 – It was with deep regret and great sadness that Foreign Minister Michael Spindelegger commented on the death of South Tyrol’s former governor Silvius Magnago: “Silvius Magnago was a great son of South Tyrol. His work in and on behalf of his homeland has been of significance far beyond its borders and will remain important for a long time after his death. His untiring endeavours for South Tyrol, his determined stance against violence – even when times were difficult – and his commitment to a pragmatic autonomy has given rise to a system that is exemplary for the whole of Europe. A political leader of European stature, Silvius Magnago always remained closely connected with his home country and the people of South Tyrol.”
