Vienna, 31 December 2010 – Today, Foreign Minister Michael Spindelegger received royal guests: Sternsingers – young carollers dressed as the Three Kings to raise money for charity – from a Catholic parish youth group visited the Foreign Ministry. “Year after year, I am impressed by the enthusiasm and commitment of young people who give up their leisure time in order to collect donations and thus help other children”, emphasised the Foreign Minister when welcoming the carollers.
Like the Austrian development cooperation programme, the Sternsinger campaign is characterised by sustainability and partnership, which play a major role in the supported projects. “The main goal is to empower local people to determine their own future and choose their own course of development”, stated Spindelegger, adding that “the Sternsingers personify hands-on solidarity and create real perspectives for people in the partner countries.” Within the framework of domestic development policy measures the Epiphany Campaign (DKA) is promoted by the Austrian Development Cooperation programme. But Austrian Development Cooperation funds, via Horizon 3000, also go to many of the more than 400 DKA projects in Austria’s partner countries, such as Guatemala. In the Epiphany Campaign projects more than one million people are directly addressed in such areas as education, social affairs, pastoral care, human rights, minority protection and protection of the environment.
Last year an amount of some 14.5 million euros was raised by the Sternsinger carollers. “It would be gratifying if it were also possible this year to motivate as many Austrians as possible to provide support”, stated the Foreign Minister hopefully.
