Jakarta, 12 March 2010 – An Austrian honorary consulate was formally opened yesterday in Bandung, in the Indonesian province of West Java (42.5 million inhabitants), by Austrian Ambassador Klaus Wölfer and Vice-Governor Dede Yusuf, with the competent director general of Indonesia’s Foreign Ministry, Retno Marsudi, as the guest of honour.
The honorary consulate is headed by architect and entrepreneur Eddy Sugiri, who has been acting as an honorary consul for Hungary since 2006. The Austrian honorary consulate in Bandung, a city with three million inhabitants, had been closed since 2001 when the former consul went into retirement.
The Indonesian subsidiary of Lenzing AG operates the world’s second largest fibre production plant in West Java. The enterprise, which has been operating here for 25 years, recently invested some 100 million euros into redevelopment and expansion.
Bandung is Austria’s sole honorary consulate in Indonesia though Austria’s interests are also represented by the honorary consul of Switzerland on the resort island of Bali. Further honorary consulates are being planned in the cities of Surabaya and Yogyakarta as well as for the island of Sumatra.
