Madrid, 15 March 2010 – “Desert Flower”, directed by Sherry Hormann and based on Waris Dirie’s autobiography, premiered on 10 March 2010 at Madrid’s Callao Cinema. Both Waris Dirie and the director were present, as was Spain’s Minister for Equal Rights, Bibiana Aído Almagro, whilst the audience included well-known figures from the world of Spanish fashion and the media.
The film, an Austro-German co-production, portrays the life of Waris Dirie, her journey from nomad child in Somalia to the catwalks of the international world of fashion, as well as her fight against female genital mutilation.
Waris Dirie established the Vienna-based Waris Dirie Foundation in 2002, and has been an Austrian national since 2005. Waris Dirie’s participation at the premiere was supported by the Austrian Cultural Forum in Madrid. In her address to the audience she expressed hope that the film would become an effective weapon in the global fight against the cruel tradition of female genital mutilation and violence against women and children at large.
