Spindelegger: "Encouraging signal for the future for all Kosovars"

First round of local elections in Kosovo passed off without incidents

Vienna, 17 November 2009 - "The first elections after Kosovo became independent are an encouraging signal for the future for all Kosovars. The fact that the elections were conducted peacefully and smoothly is an expression of democratic maturity", said Foreign Minister Michael Spindelegger, expressing his satisfaction with the course of the Kosovar local elections on 15 November."The Kosovar authorities themselves organized these elections."The responsible bodies and in particular the state election commission have done an excellent work in managing the election. At the same time, those cases in which irregularities did appear must be resolved as soon as possible“, Spindelegger continued.

There was a gratifyingly strong participation of the Serb community south of the river Ibar."The rising number of Serbs living in Kosovo who are exerting their democratic rights under the constitution in force is an important step toward building a multiethnic Kosovo", stressed the Foreign Minister.

"But there is no reason for complacency over what has been achieved so far.Conducting the second round of local elections, as well as the elections scheduled to be held in two districts within six months, are the next challenges ahead", said Spindelegger, who demanded responsible actions from the national and local politicians in this respect.
