Vienna, 2 December 2009 – „The challenges facing the international community in Afghanistan are complex and cannot be managed with purely military means. Austria therefore welcomes the new approach of the US Administration. It takes this complexity into account and is geared towards greater responsibility being assumed by the Afghan government and the Afghan population“, said Foreign Minister Michael Spindelegger after the revised US strategy for Afghanistan was announced by President Obama on 1 December.
„All elements aiming at strengthening the Afghan civil society and Afghan self-responsibility are of particular importance. This refers in particular to the areas of the rule of law, good governance, the fight against corruption, and the development of state structures to cope with these tasks. Austria will also make a contribution to this in accordance with the possibilities available“, said Spindelegger.
