Bucharest, 28 October 2009 – The President of the Sibiu County Council in Romania, Martin Bottesch, was presented with the Great Silver Decoration of Honour for Merit to the Republic of Austria awarded to him by the Austrian Federal President during the Austrian National Day reception on 24 October 2009 in the fortified church of Cristian in Transylvania.The numerous guests included the Mayor of Sibiu, Klaus Johannis, and the renowned Transylvanian writer Eginald Schlattner.
Martin Bottesch is a descendant of the Landler, the Protestants who began to leave Austria in 1734 for religious reasons and settled down in the Sibiu area in Transylvania.Bottesch is also one of the leading representatives of the Democratic Forum of Germans in Romania.
In his eulogy, the Austrian Ambassador in Romania Martin Eichtinger acknowledged President Bottesch as a promoter of Austrian projects in the humanitarian and cultural area and as a supporter of the Austrian efforts to intensify contacts to former Austrians and Austrian expatriates in the District of Sibiu.
