New cooperation project between Austrian international cultural policy and the MuseumsQuartier Wien

Presentation of the programme "freiraum quartier21 INTERNATIONAL"

Vienna, 28 September 2009 - During a press meeting scheduled for tomorrow Tuesday, 29 September 2009, the Cultural Policy Section of the Federal Ministry for European and International Affairs and the MuseumsQuartier Wien will be presenting their new cooperation in the project "freiraum quartier21 INTERNATIONAL". The objective of this new series of events titled "freiraum quartier21 INTERNATIONAL" is to place increasing focus on international exhibitions and projects from the areas of fashion, design, and digital culture in Vienna.

We are very pleased that the MuseumsQuartier under director Dr. Wolfgang Waldner puts its confidence in the expertise of the Austrian International Culture for the implementation and design of the new programme series "freiraum quartier21 INTERNATIONAL"", said Ambassador Emil Brix, head of the Cultural Policy Section of the Foreign Ministry, and added that "this cooperation with the MuseumsQuartier once again clearly underscores the professionalism and competence of the overall Austrian international cultural policy and the Austrian Cultural Forums abroad."

The new programme "freiraum quartier21 INTERNATIONAL" will open with a design exhibition titled "Real World Laboratory - Central European Design", a project by the platform Culture Central Europe, which was conceived and produced for the Saint ÉtienneInternationalDesign Biennale 2008. The exhibition, curated by Polish designers Czeslawa Frejlich and Magda Kochanowska, will present design positions from Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Slovenia, and Austria, with each country presenting objects from a different subject area typical for the respective region. The objects on display will include furniture from Austria, means of transportation from Slovakia, glass and china from the Czech Republic, shoes from Slovenia, building materials from Hungary and lighting from Poland, as well as wig-shaped barstools, inflatable PVC lamps, translucent concrete, and much more.
