Rome/Vienna, 9 December 2009 – Federal President Heinz Fischer awarded the Austrian Cross of Honour for Science and Arts 1st Class to Agata Amato Mangiameli, professor of law philosophy at the „Tor Vergata“ university in Rome, and the Great Silver Decoration of Honour for Merit to the Republic of Austria to Stelio Mangiameli, former prorector of the Teramo university. The decorations were presented to them today by the Austrian Ambassador in Rome.

In their research on the area of constitutional and European law, both Agata and Stelio Mangiameli have over several years studied the ideas of the major thinkers of Austrian legal science, in particular the teachings of Hans Kelsens, the Vienna School of Law, the Viennese jurists Adolf Merkel and Alfred Verdross, as well as the school of natural law and the Viennese social ethicist Johannes Messner. Both scholars maintain close scientific contacts to their colleagues at Austrian universities, which is also reflected in their numerous publications. They always invited Austrian jurists to the scientific events they organized, thus providing a groundbreaking example of cross-border collegial cooperation with Austria.
