Cultural dialogue in the Euro-Mediterranean region: Austro-Tunisian cultural talks in Vienna

Meeting of the Mixed Commission in the fields of culture, science and education

Vienna, 18 February 2009 –The fifth meeting of the Austro-Tunisian Mixed Commission, held on 16 and 17 February 2009, focused on cooperation between the Republic of Austria and the Republic of Tunisia in fields such as culture, science and education. A programme was signed on cooperation between 2009 and 2012 in the fields indicated.

The cooperation programme that was signed reflects the close bilateral relations between Austria and Tunisia and will help to further intensify and strengthen cooperation in the fields of higher education, general education and occupational training and culture, as well as cooperation in issues relating to women and families.

"The work programme makes clear that there is growing interest in Austria in cooperation programmes with Mediterranean states. Austria and Tunisia not only want to further develop bilateral cultural relations, but also cooperation in such important areas as inter-cultural dialogue," emphasised Ambassador Emil Brix, Head of the Cultural Policy Section of the Federal Ministry for European and International Affairs, when asked to comment on the outcome of the meeting.

In 2009, Austria and Tunisia will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations. To mark the occasion, the Vienna Opera Ball Orchestra will give a guest performance in El Jem on 4 July, while a Klimt/Schiele facsimile exhibition will be shown in Tunis in December 2009.
