Santiago, 13 November 2009 – The 60th anniversary of the worldwide non-governmental organization SOS Kinderdorf will also be celebrated in Chile, where SOS Kinderdorf has been active since 1965.True to the meaning of the Kinderdorf idea, the large SOS Kinderdorf family gathered in the Residence of the Austrian Ambassador in Santiago – children, Kinderdorf mothers, godfathers, officials, friends, and supporters. In his message, Foreign Minister Spindelegger praised the SOS Kinderdorf as „an international movement for the benefit of humanity“.
Since the very beginning, SOS Kinderdorf Chile has been closely linked to the Austrian colony living in Chile, which energetically established and financially supported the first settlements in the country.Following this tradition, the president of the Association of Austrians in Chile, Peter Moldovanyi, presented a cheque for the outfitting of the 14th Kinderdorf in Chile, now shortly before its completion.
With his idea to establish the SOS-Kinderdorf, Vorarlberg-born Herman Gmeiner set new standards in the care for children. This idea became popular around the world.Today, there are 500 Children’s Villages in 132 countries.Compared to the rest of Latin America, Chile is the country in which the SOS Kinderdorf managed to achieve the closest form of cooperation with the government agencies."This mutual trust is reflected not least in the level of subsidies provided by the Chilean government", stressed Heinrich Müller, deputy secretary general of SOS Kinderdorf International for Latin America and the Caribbean.
