Plassnik congratulates Paul Rübig on EU award

Vienna, 10 October 2008 - "The nomination of Paul Rübig as MEP of the year 2008 is a visible recognition of his longstanding and tireless work in and for Europe. As a convinced European, I am particularly proud of the fact that this award went to an Austrian within the European Parliament," stated Foreign Minister Ursula Plassnik, commenting on the presentation of the MEP award for 2008 to Dr. Paul Rübig of Upper Austria, who won the award in the Research and Innovation category.

Rübig received the award, among other things, for his successful commitment to a reduction in roaming prices for mobile phones and for his participation in establishing the `European Technology Institute´. "In his twelve years as an MEP Paul Rübig has always been an open and sympathetic contact for the concerns of all Austrians. The introduction of an EU-wide `European rate´ for mobile phones, which is partly his achievement, led to a reduction of mobile telephone rates within the EU by as much as 60%. His work shows exactly what the European Union stands for - a Europe that offers benefits and protection, a Europe that yields concrete results that can be directly felt by the people," concluded Plassnik.
