New Austrian honorary consulate opened in Thessaloniki

Thessaloniki, 20 October 2008 - The Austrian Ambassador in Greece, Dr. Michael Linhart opened a new honorary consulate in Thessaloniki on 20 October 2008. Mrs. Elisabeth Kastanakis-Havlicek will be appointed Honorary Consul.

Following a brief interruption, Austria now again has a honorary consulate in Greece's second-largest city, whose metropolitan area accommodates a population of almost one million.

More than 50,000 Austrians spend one of their holidays at the beaches around Thessaloniki each year (especially on the Chalkidike Peninsula), and some 500 Austrians live permanently in this part of Greece. A series of Austrian companies from the construction, environmental, energy, and transport sector are operating branch offices in Thessaloniki, a city that has developed into a central business junction for the Southern Balkans.

The opening of the honorary consulate will be used as an occasion to strengthen Austria's excellent reputation as a nation of culture in Northern Greece. On the evening after the opening of the new official premises, the Austrian Ambassador and the Honorary Consul will invite important personalities from the political, economic, and cultural circles of Thessaloniki, as well as Austrian expatriates and friends of Austria to a concert of the Austrian-Greek piano trio "Trio Tritonous", which will be followed by a reception in the state conservatory of Thessaloniki.

The official premises of the honorary consulate in Thessaloniki are situated at the following address: Mitropoleos 46-48, 54623 Thessaloniki, Tel. +30 2310 478300 .
