Establishment of the Austro-Turkish Women’s Platform on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women

Ankara, 5 December 2008 - On 25 November, the Austro-Turkish Women´s Platform was launched at the Austrian Embassy in Ankara. Chaired by Ambassador Heidemaria Gürer, the constituent meeting was attended by forty representatives of Turkish women’s organisations. The Platform is to serve as a forum for the exchange of knowledge and experience and help develop joint projects in the future. At the same time it is to promote a climate which provides protection for women’s concerns and interests.

A lively exchange of ideas on one of the future priority themes - "Women and Employment" - took place at the very first meeting, illuminating the perspectives of both female employers and employees. In the plenary discussion areas such as political participation, violence against women, schools, education and health were also defined as particularly relevant for the future work of the Platform. The integration of Austrian women experts will be particularly useful in this context and help intensify the exchange.

The great interest of the participants, who come from a very broad spectrum of areas and organisations, emphasises the importance of launching this women-oriented Austro-Turkish initiative, which sent out a signal of self-confidence on this year’s International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.
