Vienna, 2 October 2007 - "We want a stable, self-confident and successful Ukraine which consistently continues its European course of reforms," stated Foreign Minister Ursula Plassnik, commenting on the preliminary results of the elections in the Ukraine.
"The Ukraine is an important neighbour of the European Union that can count on our active support in the future. However, we expect the incoming Ukrainian government to continue resolutely on the path of reform embarked upon - not as a present to the EU but in the interests of the Ukrainian people," continued the Minister.
In this context Plassnik also referred to the close bilateral cooperation in areas such as business, the Danube Co-operation Process and relations to Moldova.
"The way yesterday's elections were conducted is encouraging and gives proof of the democratic maturing process Ukraine has undergone. The issue now is to swiftly form a stable government capable of action to press ahead with the necessary social and economic development," stated Plassnik, referring to a first preliminary assessment by the international election observation mission.
The quiet conduct of the elections, the largely efficient handling of all technical aspects by the Central Election Commission and the high proportion of women in the administration of the authorities in charge of the elections at all levels were listed among the positive aspects of the entire election campaign.
