Foreign Minister sends a clear message concerning the situation in Burma
New York, 26 September 2007 - "All eyes of the international community are turned towards Myanmar. The violent actions against peaceful demonstrators and the arrests of representatives of the democratic movement cannot be justified by any means and must be stopped immediately. It must become clear to the regime in Myanmar that violence will not solve the problems of the country." These clear words were the reaction of Foreign Minister Ursula Plassnik to the worrying news from Myanmar (Burma).
"The courage of the people in Myanmar in view of the threats and repressions by the army and the police is admirable. They deserve the full support and solidarity of the international community. The attempts of a violent clampdown of the peaceful protest movement and the suppression of the legitimate demands for democracy and freedom of opinion and association must be condemned unreservedly", Plassnik continued. Moreover, the Foreign Minister called upon Myanmar's neighbours and especially China to use their influence on the regime to help calm down the situation.
