Romania pays tribute to Austria as largest investor; Romania very interested in
energy security and Danube Co-operation
Bucharest, 2 October 2007 a Today the new Austrian ambassador to Romania, Dr. Martin Eichtinger, presented his credentials to Romanian President Traian Basescu in Bucharest.
During the subsequent talks President Basescu paid tribute to the important role played by Austrian business in Romania. Austria is by far the largest investor in Romania. More than 4,500 Austrian firms have invested some 12 billion euros.
President Basescu also highlighted Romania’s great interest in intensive cooperation with the Danube region. In this context questions of energy security were particularly important; it is in this field that Romania and Austria are pursuing the joint project of the Nabucco gas pipeline.
Another topic was Euro 2008: President Basescu expressed the hope that Romania will succeed in qualifying and that Euro 2008, in cooperation with the embassy, will be a major celebration of sport in Romania, too.
