Plassnik shocked at murder of committed Turkish-Armenian journalist
Vienna, 20 January 2007 - "I am shocked by the cowardly murder of this committed journalist, who was particularly dedicated to supporting the Armenian minority in Turkey. Hrant Dink will remain in our memory as a courageous and persistent fighter for human rights in Turkey," said Foreign Minister Ursula Plassnik, commenting on reports about the homicide committed in Istanbul yesterday.
"The Turkish authorities are now called upon to do everything possible to quickly investigate this appalling crime and bring those responsible to justice," continued Plassnik.
Referring to last year’s conviction of Hrant Dink by the Turkish judiciary for "insulting Turkish identity", Plassnik said: "I welcome the clear words spoken by President Ahmet Necdet Sezer and Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who condemned this cowardly murder. In their statements I see the will of the Turkish heads of state and government not to weaken in their efforts for a climate of tolerance and understanding in Turkish society," concluded Plassnik.
