Foreign Minister on nuclear talks between Javier Solana and Ali Larijani

Vienna, 10 September 2006 - On 9 and 10 September, talks on the Iranian nuclear programme were held between the EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana and the chief Iranian negotiator Ali Larijani at the Federal Chancellery, Vienna.

"Vienna seemed the right place for these negotiations. Vienna is the seat of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and a traditional venue for dialogue. This is why we offered our good services and created a suitable environment for the meeting," said Plassnik, commenting on Austria’s organisation of the meeting.

"The fact that the talks were constructive is encouraging. We have to build on this and continue our efforts without interruption. The European Union and the community of states are united in their support for Javier Solana’s efforts aimed at a diplomatic resolution of the issue through negotiations. All possibilities offered by negotiation have to be fully exhausted," said the Foreign Minister.

"The main purpose of the talks is to re-establish confidence. The community of states has to be convinced by Iran that its nuclear programme serves peaceful purposes only. This is the reason why direct talks are so important, as this is the only way of clarifying any misunderstanding that exists," continued Plassnik.

"The European Union is interested in partnership-based relations with Iran. To this end, Iran has to contribute its share, not least by resolving the nuclear question. We also expect Iran to play its important role in the Middle East in a responsible manner," concluded Plassnik.
