Moscow, 6 October 2005 - During her two-day visit to the Russian Federation, Foreign Minister Ursula Plassnik held a meeting with her Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov. In addition to bilateral and multilateral topics (such as the OSCE, the Council of Europe and the UN), the meeting was centred on Austria's upcoming EU Presidency.
"The bilateral relationship between Austria and Russia is friendly and trouble-free and shows remarkable dynamics especially in the economic field," said Plassnik. "This provides us with a good basis for further harnessing our joint potential."
The Russian Foreign Minister showed great interest in rapidly and substantially strengthening cooperation with the EU. In this context, the areas of traffic and transportation policy (trans-European networks), the energy sector and environmental policy were mentioned, in particular.
"I am looking forward to our cooperation during the Austrian EU Presidency," Plassnik continued. "Russia is a key partner for the EU. The already adopted road maps towards the Four Common Areas form our basis for the further - custom-tailored - development of this strategic partnership."
The two Foreign Ministers discussed thematic and organisational aspects of the Austrian EU Presidency. The next meeting of the EU Troika and Russia to take place at the ministerial level, for example, as well as the next EU human rights consultations are scheduled for February 2006. The next EU-Russia Summit will be held in Russia in May 2006. In addition, Russia will also chair the G8 this coming year.
