of the International Criminal Court

Vienna, 31 October 2005 - Foreign Minister Ursula Plassnik congratulated Mexico on depositing the instrument ratifying the Statute of the International Criminal Court with the Secretary-General of the United Nations in New York on 28 October, making it the 100th signatory state to do so. "This means an important strengthening of the International Criminal Court, an important step forward in the universal fight against impunity in the event of crimes against humanity, war crimes and genocide", said the Foreign Minister.

"Austria strongly advocates universal recognition of the International Criminal Court", continued Plassnik, adding that a few days ago Austria had become the first state to sign an Enforcement of Sentences Agreement with the International Criminal Court. Austria has been a signatory state of the International Criminal Court since 28 December 2000. The statute of the International Criminal Court entered into force on 1 July 2002.
