Vienna, 31 August 2005 - An emergency meeting has been held in the Ministry for Foreign Affairs on the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in the USA, which also affected Austrian citizens.
Foreign Minister Ursula Plassnik has dispatched the Austrian Consul General in Washington to the crisis region: "He is an experienced colleague who will assist us in our efforts in the crisis region. Our top priority now is to contact Austrian citizens who are still in the disaster zone and determine what kind of help they might need."
The Austrian Embassy in Washington and the Foreign Ministry Citizens’ Service are working 24 hours a day. We are cooperating closely with EU partners, and have also requested the US authorities to help find the whereabouts of Austrian citizens whom we know from relatives to be in the region but who have not been in touch.
Relatives can also call the Ministry for Foreign Affairs on 0501150-4411.
