Vienna, 9 November 2005 - Foreign Minister Ursula Plassnik congratulated the Austrian Heinz Zourek on his appointment as Director General of the DG Enterprise and Industry in the European Commission. "Heinz Zourek is an experienced and knowledgeable EU official and he has been appointed to an important function. I am convinced that his long experience makes him highly suitable for this position", said Plassnik.
After a professional career in the Chamber of Labour, the Austrian Trade Union Federation and the EFTA Surveillance Authority, Zourek was appointed Deputy Director General of DG Internal Market and Services in the European Commission in 1995. In 2001, Zourek became Deputy Director General of DG Enterprise and Industry, and most recently held the post of acting Director General.
The Directorate General deals with policy areas such as enterprise and industrial policy, the promotion of small and medium-sized enterprises, e-business and pan-European electronic services.
"I am delighted that following on from Günter Hanreich, Director General of Eurostat, Heinz Zourek is the second Austrian to have been nominated for the position of Director General in the European Commission", concluded Plassnik.
