Vienna, 15 July 2005 - "Following the passing of the Austrian Ambassador to the United Kingdom, Ambassador Dr. Ernst Sucharipa, my concern is to find the quickest and best possible solution for the Austrian diplomatic presence in the country currently holding the EU Presidency", said Foreign Minister Ursula Plassnik.
The current Austrian Ambassador to Tunisia, Dr. Gabriele Matzner-Holzer, will therefore be posted to the Austrian Embassy in London as chargée d'affaires ad interim. Ambassador Matzner-Holzer will take up her posting by 1 August at the latest and will represent Austria's interests in the United Kingdom together with the well-established team at the Embassy in London.
This is particularly necessary in view of the close cooperation between Austria and the UK during the British EU Presidency and in the lead-up to Austria's takeover of the Presidency, as well as the cooperation with London on security issues following the recent terror attacks in the city.
"I am pleased that Ambassador Matzner-Holzer, showing great dedication and flexibility, has decided to take on this posting. I wish her every success in this challenging task", said Plassnik. The ambassadorial post at the Embassy in London will be advertised via the normal official channels and filled in accordance with the regular rules of procedure.
