Foreign Minister congratulates IAEA on Nobel Peace Prize
Vienna, 7 October 2005 - "I congratulate the International Atomic Energy Agency and its Director General Mohamed ElBaradei on the unique acknowledgment that the award of the Nobel Peace Prize represents," said Foreign Minister Ursula Plassnik on Friday.
"It is a thoroughly deserved sign of the international recognition of their work and commitment to multilateral nuclear disarmament and the non-proliferation of nuclear weapons. The exemplary sense of responsibility, impartiality and professional competence with which the IAEA has confronted these challenges is unquestioned throughout the world," continued Plassnik. Its great and growing responsibility for peacekeeping and international security was also recognised internationally, added the Foreign Minister. "This award will strengthen the Organisation in its daily work, especially in the face of the major challenges posed by the current situation on the nuclear front," said Plassnik.
"The IAEA’s outstanding reputation is due to a large extent to the personality and proven leadership qualities of its Director General Mohamed ElBaradei, who was unanimously reappointed in September for a further four years in office. His cooperation with Austria, which also fully supported his reappointment, has always been excellent. Austria is proud to host an organisation like the IAEA," concluded the Foreign Minister.
