Vienna, 18 November 2005 - On Monday, 21 November, the UN Vienna Civil Society Award 2005 will be presented at the Federal Chancellery by the Secretary General for Foreign Affairs Johannes Kyrle in the presence of the Director General of the Office of the United Nations in Vienna, Antonio Maria Costa, and the President of the Vienna Provincial Parliament, Erika Stubenvoll. This year’s awards will go to three civil society initiatives which have distinguished themselves by their commitment to helping drug addicts:
The initiative "Albergue Infantil de Bogotá" from Columbia for its commitment on behalf of street children from the drug scene.
The "Rebirth Charity Organization" from Iran for its special treatment and rehabilitation programme for drug addicts.
"Mothers against Drugs" from Belarus for the care for drug addicts and people infected with HIV/AIDS.
The UN Vienna Civil Society Award is presented once a year to persons and organisations who have rendered distinguished service in connection with the fight against crime, drug abuse, corruption, human trafficking and terrorism. The initiative is based on the successful cooperation between the Austrian Ministry for Foreign Affairs, the United Nations Office for Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and the City of Vienna.
