Vienna, 13 June 2005 - At the invitation of the Austrian Federal Ministry for Foreign Affairs, the Director-General for Cultural Affairs at the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Sule Soysal, paid a visit to Austria on 13 June to hold talks on further cultural cooperation on the basis of the Memorandum of Understanding on Cultural Cooperation.
In this context, Director-General Sule Soysal and the Head of the Cultural Policy Section at the Austrian Foreign Ministry, Ambassador Emil Brix, signed a supplementary agreement to the Austrian-Turkish Memorandum of Understanding. This agreement, drafted in cooperation with the Federal Ministry for Education, Science and Culture, above all addresses issues relating to the administration and management of the Austrian School in Istanbul, St. George's College, together with issues relating to residence and work permits for Austrian teachers at this school and the recognition of the school’s certificates. A further suggestion proposed in this context was the resumption of the meetings of the Mixed Commission of Educational Experts, which last met in 1991.
Intensified cooperation was also agreed upon for the Austrian archaeological projects in Ephesos and the Ephesos Museum in Vienna. The Mozart Year 2006 will be celebrated with joint projects, and the holding of a Turkish "cultural season" in Vienna is envisaged for 2007.
These talks aimed at strengthening cooperation in cultural matters are an expression of both countries' interest in deepening bilateral relations in general.
