05.05.2003

Vienna, 5 May 2003 - The Foreign Ministers of 13 states - Chile, Greece, Ireland, Jordan, Canada, Mali, the Netherlands, Norway, Austria, Switzerland, Slovenia, South Africa (observer status) and Thailand will be meeting in Graz on 8 - 10 May. These states have joined together with the scientific community and civil society to form the "Human Security Network", a supra-regional interest group whose goal is to develop initiatives and new political strategies with the aim of protecting and promoting the security needs of individuals and society as a whole.

Austria took over the chairmanship of the Network from Chile last year. The highlight of the Austrian chairmanship of the Human Security Network is the forthcoming Ministerial Meeting in Graz, the human rights capital. The priority issues of the Austrian chairmanship under Minister for Foreign Affairs Benita Ferrero - Waldner are "human rights education" and "children in armed conflicts".
