Austria signed agreement with UNHCR to ensure swift assessment of applications for asylum filed at airports

Vienna, 21 February 2003 - On 18 February 2003 an agreement was signed between the Austrian federal government and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees regarding the involvement of the UNHCR in the asylum procedure when the application for asylum is filed during the border control procedure after entry to Austria via an airport. The purpose of the agreement is to enable swift assessment of applications for asylum filed at airports with the assistance of a representative of the UNHCR. Under the agreement, Austria undertakes to absorb half of the personnel costs for the "Airport Officer" appointed by the UNHCR.
