Spindelegger: „Wichtiger Beitrag Österreichs für den weltweiten Schutz von religiösen Minderheiten“

Vienna, 23 May 2012 – On 22 and 23 May, a high-level expert seminar discussing the protection of religious minorities was held at the Diplomatic Academy in Vienna at the initiative of Austria and in cooperation with the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights. The meeting focussed on the situation of religious minorities world-wide and ways to improve their protection. The experts discussed mechanisms and systems for protection that are available at national, regional and international level. “We must not simply stand by and watch the increasing violence against religious minorities in the world. Only by taking concerted efforts internationally will we be able to ensure protection of religious minorities”, Austria’s Vice Chancellor and Foreign Minister Michael Spindelegger said.

Vienna, 20 May 2012 - “The Arab Spring stands for a legitimate desire for a life lived in freedom and dignity.
Österreich und Lettland rücken während der zypriotischen EU-Präsidentschaft enger zusammen!

Vienna, 21 May 2012 – Austria and Latvia are to work together closely during the EU Presidency of Cyprus (1 July - 31 December 2012). The Secretary General at the Austrian Foreign Ministry, Ambassador Johannes Kyrle, and the Latvian State Secretary Andris Teikmanis signed a Memorandum of Understanding to this effect on 18 May 2012 in Limassol, Cyprus. The Memorandum was signed against the background of the current efforts of the Austrian Foreign Ministry to achieve both a better utilisation of resources and more exchange at the level of foreign policy by stepping up cooperation with EU and/or Schengen countries in real estate matters. The agreement will involve a Latvian diplomat working at the Austrian Embassy in Nicosia (Cyprus) during the EU Presidency of Cyprus. It is important for Latvia to be able to observe how an EU member such as Cyprus manages the Presidency.

Das Kulturforum in New York feiert sein zehnjähriges Bestehen

NEW YORK – “The Austrian Cultural Forum in New York is a showcase for a modern and innovative image of Austria in the USA. Over the past ten years, not only the dramatic building caused a stir: the Cultural Forum has organised, hosted and presented some 2000 events staging contemporary Austrian artists and scientists during this time”, Austrian Vice Chancellor and Foreign Minister Michael Spindelegger said on the occasion of the anniversary. The new building designed by architect Raimund Abraham was opened in 2002. The daring exterior of this masterpiece of architecture illustrates what is presented within: modern Austrian art with an edge to it, art that is worth seeing, feeling and listening to and that keeps moving forward in the coexistence and discourse with its American environment. Some of the highlights of the past ten years were the exhibitions “The Seen and the Hidden: [Dis]covering the Veil” about the veils worn by Muslim women, and “Under Pain of Death” about capital punishment.

Waldner: „Europäische Werte müssen auch in der Ukraine gelten“

Brussels, 14 May 2012 – “Austria and its partners in the EU are concerned about the selective justice and lack of rule of law in the Ukraine”, Austrian State Secretary Waldner said in the debate about the situation in the Ukraine at the Council on Foreign Relations. “Yulia Timoshenko is a particularly prominent case, and it is a matter of course that appropriate medical treatment must be ensured for her. What we demand from the Ukraine, however, is more comprehensive: The country must implement European values and guarantee the rule of law. The issue of politically motivated convictions also needs to be addressed promptly and independent court proceedings must be ensured”, Waldner said commenting on the current situation in the country. Afghanistan was also on the agenda of the deliberations in Brussels.

Vienna, 11 May 2012 – “The United Nations General Assembly has taken a firm stance and shown its commitment in all the developments related to the Arab Spring and especially with regard to the outbreak of violence in Syria. Regular and in-depth exchanges of opinions with its President is thus essential in times such as these”, Austrian Vice Chancellor and Foreign Minister Michael Spindelegger said after his working meeting with the President of the 66th General Assembly, Nassir Abdulaziz Al-Nasser, at the Austrian Foreign Ministry this morning. The discussions focused, among other things, on the situation in Syria, the peace process in the Middle East and the imminent Rio +20 Conference.
Other topics were the issues that dominate the work of Al-Nasser’s presidency, such as the rule of law and the importance of mediation for conflict prevention. “Rule of law was one of Austria’s priorities during its membership in the UN Security Council and we are consistently pursuing this aim now as a member of the UN Human Rights council.

Spindelegger: „Balkan ist sicherheitspolitische Kernzone für Österreich“

Vienna, 8 May 2012 – The Austrian Council of Ministers today decided to extend the mission of Austrian reserve troops to the EUFOR Althea military deployment in Bosnia and Herzegovina (until 16 November 2012) and to KFOR in Kosovo (until 31 December 2013). The operative reserves for EUFOR Althea and KFOR (ORF) will be on stand-by at their standard military bases and are able to support the troops in Bosnia and Herzegovina and in Kosovo at short notice should the security situation deteriorate in these regions.
The importance of this military mission is best illustrated by the current deployment of the German-Austrian ORF battalion in Kosovo. Some 150 Austrian soldiers were deployed to Kosovo on 6 May to ensure security and stability during the Serbian elections in North Kosovo. Austrian Vice Chancellor and Foreign Minister Michael Spindelegger stressed the importance of this military mission in his statement.
