Spindelegger: "Austria supports Kosovo’s EU perspective"
Foreign Minister meets with Kosovo’s Prime Minister Hashim Thaçi
Vienna, 8 February 2010 - "Kosovo is becoming the acid test for Europe’s efforts to stabilise the Western Balkans, promote business and achieve the long-term integration of this region into the EU," stated Foreign Minister Michael Spindelegger following the visit of Kosovo’s Prime Minister Hashim Thaçi to Vienna. "Austria fully supports Kosovo’s EU perspective. We have been among those who accompanied Kosovo on its path towards independence and to this very day continue to offer a platform for international commitment in Kosovo," continued the Minister, referring to the meeting of the International Steering Group for Kosovo convened in Vienna today.
In this context the Minister praised the successful organisation of the first elections in November 2009 shortly after the country had gained its independence: "The peaceful and smooth conduct of the local elections was an encouraging sign and a proof of Kosovo’s will to build functioning democratic structures." It was a positive sign for the development of a multi-ethnic Kosovo when the Serb community made use of its right to vote to an increasing extent. "But Pristina must pro-actively continue its efforts as regards the Serb population," emphasised Spindelegger.
The Minister also stressed that further reform efforts were required, particularly in areas such as security issues and the fight against corruption. "The main focus of attention is currently on strengthening rule of law structures and building a functioning economy. The EU and Austria are prepared to help. However, the government in Pristina also has to contribute its share and continue its close cooperation with the EULEX mission."
Austria is strongly committed both multilaterally and bilaterally, and there are good prospects particularly in the economic field. For instance, a bilateral investment protection agreement was concluded on 22 January. "With this agreement we are further developing our relations in a targeted manner, creating a sound basis for Austrian investments in Kosovo. This should serve as another incentive for strengthening our economic relations," continued Spindelegger.
"I am particularly delighted that we have good interpersonal contacts with our partners in Kosovo. Our joint event within the framework of the European Dialogue project, held in Graz and attended by Kosovo’s Minister of Education, Dr. Enver Hoxhaj, who was a member of the panel, was a real success," concluded Spindelegger.
