Spindelegger: "A convincing vote of confidence for the new EU Commission"
Europe will present itself more united in the future
Vienna, 9 February 2010 - The European Parliament has approved the new team headed by Commission President José Manuel Barroso with a clear majority. For the first time, a Commission will take office that was formed in accordance with the rules of the Lisbon Treaty. "The new Commission is now finally in office, the Treaty of Lisbon is in force, and Europe is about to experience a change of paradigm: We have new rules, new institutions, and new people at the helm. Now we must address the pressing challenges of the future without any friction losses". In this context, the Foreign Minister cited central topics like Europe's future positioning in a multi-polar world, safeguarding of the "European model of life" and managing the economic and financial crisis. "Only if we manage in the EU to speak with a more united voice to the outside world and to jointly defend European interests in the world will we have a say in how the global issues of the future are tackled", concluded Spindelegger.
